Welcome to the second installment of Life Lessons from Lola, a series about an adorable kitten
who’s traveled lots of miles and stolen several hearts in her journey home to Terry and me. Monday I shared our granddaughter’s experiences with Lola and why she happened to be looking for a place for her roommate’s kitten.
COUSIN TO THE RESCUE
Our oldest grandson, Brady, moved to mid-town Atlanta in the late spring to work for an architectural firm. One of the perks has been eating dinner occasionally with his Aunt Maria and Uncle Brad who live nearby. On one such evening in October, they told Brady about Emily and Lola’s dilemma. Turns out he’d actually been thinking of getting a cat to keep him company, so you can guess what happened next.
That dinner prompted the following texts.
Friday, October 17
Brady: So, I’m probably going to adopt Emily’s cat. Thoughts?
Me: Is it ok to have one in your apt? Do you like its looks? Are you up to taking care of a cat? Does it have its shots? Been altered?
Brady: 1) Should be ok 2) it’s short haired, so I am ok with it 3) probably I would like it to be older but young is ok 4) no, but Maria and Brad offered to split some of the costs
Me: Male or female? Neutered or spayed? It would probably be good company. Younger is better. You can bond easier.
Brady: Turns out there are a lot of low cost options for pets. Female, 12-13 weeks, not spayed but splitting cost
Me: Go for it if you can afford it
Brady: I’ll get her tonight
Me: Send a picture
Brady:
Me: Aww What’s her name? U can give her a new name. I did Lucy
Brady: I think her name is Lola … That’s ok but I’ll probably make an adjustment. Heard you were coming to ATL pretty soon?
Me: Driving over on Nov. 6 … Hope to see you. Is Lola a showgirl?
Brady: She’s 12 weeks old. How inappropriate, thank you. Yeah, I’m sure we can meet
Me: No offense meant. She might grow up to be a showgirl though
Saturday, October 18
Me: Did you get Lola?
Brady: I did!
Me: Is she loving? Handle her a lot so she will be friendly
When I talked to Maria on Sunday she told me how they had brought Lola back after a sorority Red Dress Gala. She said Emily cried when she put Lola in their car.
Those tears touched us all, yet everyone knew the girls had made the right decision. Emily’s parents comforted her with the thought that she could see Lola when she came home because she’d be with Brady. And maybe someday, after she graduates and has her own place, Ems can think about getting her own kitty.
Thought for the Day: Sometimes demonstrating maturity means admitting it’s the wrong time to add something to your life, especially a pet.
What about you? Did this remind you of a time when you had to make a grown-up decision for the sake of someone or something you loved?
Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,
Proverbs 1:5

I'm a lover of God, mother of three, grandmother of eight, and a collector of friends. I like nothing better than talking, listening, laughing and eating with that crowd. My husband, Terry, and I feel blessed to wake up each day to a magnificent view of the Arkansas River. An amazing variety of creatures, from bobcats and coyotes to deer, bunnies and nutria, along with all sorts of birds roam the natural area behind our house. We also share our home with three silly kitties. I often find a lesson in what I see both indoors and out on any given day and usually find myself writing about it. I hope you'll join me in exploring the ways God speaks to us through His creation.
